1 Peter 1, 1 – 4 & 22 – 25.

Introduction and thanks (in Korean)

Today is Pentecost Sunday. 1 Peter is a good place to start on Pentecost Sunday. Peter is writing probably from Rome some 30 – 35 years after Pentecost. He is writing to small groups of Christians (Jews and Gentiles) scattered along the southern shore of the Black Sea and throughout the northern half of what is Turkey today. At least three of the places mentioned were represented among the crowds in Jerusalem at Pentecost (as listed in Acts 2). Perhaps some of those present at Pentecost were now elders in these small churches. (He addresses the elders in chapter 5 of his letter).

1 Peter is also a good place to start in Kapo. Peter describes his readers as ‘exiles’ – people living away from their roots. Some of them may have been expelled from Rome by the emperor, Claudius. They were living in a backwater away from the main trade routes. Many of the early residents of Kapo were refugees from North Korea or had come from other places. The mother of one of our hospital staff was Japanese, left behind from the Japanese occupation. We ourselves were alien residents. Kapo seemed like a backwater, not even part of Masan, a medium sized provincial city – a long way from Seoul. Yet these scattered Christians to whom Peter writes were ‘elect’ – known and loved by God. The same was true in Kapo when we lived here and, I am sure, is true today.

1 Peter is also a good place to start anywhere at any time because its focus is the gospel. In Korean the opening word of the letter is ‘Jesus Christ’ and the closing word of the chapter speaks of the ‘good news’ or ‘gospel’ – ‘the sound of blessing’.

When we came to Kapo in 1967 we were young and inexperienced, but we were learning about the power of the gospel to change people’s lives. It is powerful because it is ‘the Word of the Lord’ – not a human philosophy. That word remains forever (v. 25). It is trustworthy because it comes from God, who is living and abides for ever (v. 23). Peter had discovered this in his own life and in

the lives of others – think of the conversion of Saul/Paul or of Cornelius. We were learning the same.

When we started to teach scripture with our hospital staff we began with Matthew’s gospel, asking, ‘Who is this Jesus? Is he really the Son of God?’ Some months later I happened to ask Mr. Jee, our hospital driver, if he knew where was a kerosene stove that had been in the garage. ‘I don’t know,’ he replied, but a few days later he came and confessed, ‘That stove – it is in my house. Here we are studying the Bible and saying that we are searching for the truth and I have told you a downright lie’.

The Word of God was beginning to bring conviction of sin. A few weeks later in early December Audrey, my wife, asked me what I would like as a Christmas present. Without thinking I replied, ‘Mr. Jee’. On Christmas morning Mr. Jee arrived at our house in his best suit. ‘I am coming to church with you,’ he said. It was his way of public confession of his new found faith and he never looked back. Now he is in heaven.

The gospel is good news especially for the poor – for ‘exiles’ from society. We were learning this too. Oo Yong was a young man in his early 20s. He came from a small village between here and Taegu. He worked as the village barber. He had had tuberculosis in his hip for 15 years without treatment. His treatment and recovery was a long and difficult journey stretching over several years. He listened to the gospel stories we told throughout this period, but could not believe. One time he was so despairing that he tried to commit suicide. Finally, while we were in England, through the love and kindness of the staff, he came to faith. He wrote to us in England:

‘In a deserted wilderness there was one lost sheep....that sheep is I, Oo Yong. I am lost in shame to know what to do. I can only cry to the Lord, walk in Christ’s path and sing hymns of praise to Him...I am receiving successful treatment with a grateful heart...dreaming of the day of glory when I can walk upright. This hope is all by the abundance of the Lord’s grace’. Good news for the poor!

So what is this good news? It springs from the mercy of God (v. 3). I think of one old man, a loyal member of Kapo church. His daughter was a Christian; he was not. One night he had a dream. An angel came to him and said, ‘I have come for your daughter’. In the morning he found that his daughter had died in the night – and was now in heaven. From this, through the mercy of God, he turned to Christ.

The gospel centres on Jesus Christ, His death (v. 2) and resurrection (v. 3.). Peter’s Pentecost sermon and the early chapters of Acts are full of this. I think of one of our staff who came to faith and confessed, ‘When we read the story of the cross I found that my heart was changed’. His life from that time on demonstrated the change. One year at New Year he said, ‘This year let us do something beautiful for God’. He did many beautiful things.

The power of the gospel is the Holy Spirit working on the Word of God (v. 23). 3000 people at Pentecost; countless numbers since, including you and me. I think of one member of our staff who was a Christian before we arrived. He told me, ‘I used to wonder why you insisted that daily Bible reading was so important for the Christian. Now I see it and I cannot do without it. He went on to be a staff member of Scripture Union, teaching others what he had learned. He now lives in Canada. In many ways Kapo village, small and insignificant as it was, became the seed bed for the development of Scripture Union that has had a profound influence on the Korean church and beyond throughout East Asia.

The gospel is good news for now and eternity (v. 4). I think of one of our patients – we called her ‘Wang Adjuma’. She was in her early 30s, had been married, but had been sent back to her family when she developed tuberculosis in her spine. She was paralysed – could not walk – and was one of the few paralysed patients who did not recover the power to walk. I think of her now, lying in her bed and singing of how in heaven she would WALK the streets of gold....good news for now and for eternity.

Come back with me to the beginning of our story. Peter’s greeting to his readers is, ‘May grace and peace be MULTIPLIED to you’ (v. 2). Peter in Rome looks back over 30 years and more since Pentecost and marvels at the spread of the gospel. He longs for that to be multiplied. I said that Kapo became a seed bed for Scripture Union. It also became a seed bed for missions. I think of one young seminary student who came to us to conduct a children’s mission in the hospital. Later he came back with his wife for missionary training and then served for many years in Hong Kong and China.

It rejoices my heart that Kapo church has a thriving missions programme. We have good news to tell. Let us be busy in telling it. May grace and peace be multiplied to you and through you. Amen.

오늘은 오순절 주일입니다. 베드로전서 1장은 오순절을 시작하며 묵상하기 좋은 말씀입니다. 베드로는 아마 오순절 이후 30-35년이 지났을 무렵 로마에서 이 편지를 쓰고 있습니다. 이 편지는 오늘날의 터키북부와 흑해남쪽 해안가에 흩어져 살고 있던 그리스도인(유대인과 이방인) 공동체에게 쓴 편지입니다. 사도행전 2장에 의하면 (본문에 언급된 본도, 갈라디아, 갑바도기아, 아시아와 비두니아 중) 적어도 3개 지역 출신 사람들이 예루살렘 오순절 현장에 있었음을 알 수 있습니다. 아마 오순절 현장에 있던 사람들 중 몇명은 작은 교회들의 장로가 되었겠죠 베드로전서 5장에 장로들에게 하는말이 있는걸 보면 말입니다.

  베드로전서는 가포에서 나누기에도 좋은 말씀입니다. 베드로는 이 편지의 독자들을 “나그네” (그 뿌리에서 떨어져 나와서 사는 사람들)라고 부릅니다. 어떤 이들은 로마에서 크라우디우스 황제에게 쫓겨났겠지요. 그들은 주요 무역로에서 벗어나 외진곳에 살고 있었습니다. 가포의 초기 정착민들 중 다수도 북한 또는 다른곳에서 온 피난민이였습니다. 병원 직원중 한명의 어머니는 해방이후 일본으로 돌아가지 못하고 남겨진 일본사람이였습니다. 가포는 서울에서 멀리떨어진, 지방도시 마산에도 속하지 못한 변두리중의 변두리였지요. 그러나 베드로가 편지를 쓴 흩어진 그리스도인들은 하나님이 아시고 하나님께 사랑받은 “택함 받은자들” 이였습니다. 우리가 가포에 살때도, 지금도 가포도 동일합니다: 가포의 그리스도인들은 택함받은 자들입니다.

  베드로전서는 언제나 어디서나 읽기에 좋은 말씀입니다. 그 중심에 복음이 있기 때문입니다. 한국어 성경에서 이 편지를 시작하는 첫 단어는 “예수 그리스도” 이고 1장의 마지막은 “복음(기쁜소식)이 곧 이 말씀이니라”고 끝맺는걸 보면 그러합니다.

  우리가 1967년도에 가포게 왔을 때, 우리는 어렸고 경험이 없었지만 사람의 삶을 변화시키는 복음의 능력을 배워가고 있었습니다. 복음에 힘이 있는 것은 복음이 인간의 철학이 아닌 “하나님의 말씀”이기 때문입니다. 그 말씀은 영원히 남아있습니다(25절). 우리가 말씀을 신뢰할수 있는 것은 말씀이 살아 계시고 영원히 거하시는(23절) 하나님께로부터 왔기 때문입니다. 베드로는 이것을 자신의 삶과 다른 이들의 삶을 통해 발견했습니다 – 사울(바울) 과 고넬료를 회심을 생각해보십시오. 우리도 이와같은 진리를 배우고 있었습니다.

  우리가 병원 직원들에게 성경을 가르치기 시작했을 때 우리는 마태복음의 이야기로 시작했습니다. “예수님이 누구인지? 진짜 하나님의 아들인지”라는 질문을 하며 말입니다. 성경공부를 시작하고 몇 달이 지난 후 병원 운전기사인 지씨(Mr. Jee)에게 차고에 있던 등유난로가 어디있는지 아냐고 물었습니다. “모릅니다” 라고 그는 대답했지만, 몇일이 지난 후 그가 찾아와 고백했습니다. “그 난로, 저희 집에 있습니다” 라고요. “우리가 여기서 성경을 공부하며 진리를 찾는다고 하면서 저는 당신에게 엄청난 거짓말을 했습니다“. 하나님의 말씀이 죄에대한 깨달음을 주기 시작한것입니다.

  몇주가 지난 12월 초 어느날, 내 아내 오드리가 크리스마스 선물로 무엇을 갖고싶냐고 물었고, 나는 생각 할 겨를도 없이 지 씨라고 대답했습니다. 크리스마스날 아침, 지씨는 제일 좋은 옷을 빼입고 우리집앞에 와서 이렇게 말했습니다 ”저 선교사님이랑 같이 교회에 갈겁니다“. 이게 자신의 신앙을 고백하는 그의 방법이였고, 이후로 그는 결코 뒤를 돌아보지 않았습니다. 이제 그는 천국에 있습니다.

  복음은 특히 가난한자, 사회에서 ‘나그네’ 된 자들에게 기쁜소식입니다. 우리는 그것을 배우고 있었습니다. 우용은 20대 초반의 젊은이였습니다. 그는 마산과 대구 사이에 있는 작은마을에서 온 동네 이발사였지요. 우용은 15년간이나 엉덩이에 결핵을 가지고도 치료를 받은적이 없었습니다. 치료와 회복의 기간은 몇 년에 걸친 어렵고도 긴 여정이였습니다. 그 여정중에 우리가 우용에게 복음의 이야기를 들려주었지만, 그는 믿기 어려워했습니다. 한번은 너무 낙심한 나머지 그가 자살을 시도할 정도였지요.

  우리가 영국으로 돌아갔을 때 병원직원들의 사랑과 섬김을 통해 그가 마침내 믿음으로 나아왔다고 했습니다. 그의 편지에는 이렇게 쓰여있었습니다:

‘황량한 광야에 길잃은 양 한 마리가 있었습니다. 그 양이 바로 저 우용입니다. 부끄러워 무엇을 해야 할지 모르겠습니다. 그저 주님께 울부짖으며 그리스도의 길을 걷고 주님을 찬양할 뿐입니다. 저는 감사한 마음으로 치료받고있습니다. 언젠가 똑바로 걸을 수 있게 될 영광의 날을 기다리면서요. 이 소망은 모두 크신 하나님의 은혜입니다.’

가난한자에게 이 얼마나 기쁜소식입니까!

  복음이란 무엇일까요? 바로 하나님의 자비에서 비롯됩니다 (3절). 가포의 충성스런 교인이였던 한 어르신이 떠오르네요. 그의 딸은 그리스도인이였지만 그는 아니였죠. 밤중에 꿈에 천사가 나타나 그에게 말하기를 ”너의 딸을 데리러왔다“고 말했습니다. 아침에 눈을 떠보니 그 딸이 밤중에 죽었고 천국에 간 것입니다. 이 일로 인해, 하나님의 자비하심으로 그가 예수께로 돌아왔습니다.

  복음의 중심은 예수그리스도, 그의 죽음과 부활에 있습니다(3절). 베드로의 오순절 설교와 사도행전 초반부를 보면 이것이 잘 드러나 있습니다. 우리 병원직원중 한명도 이렇게 고백했습니다 ”십자가 이야기를 읽을 때 내 마음이 변한 것을 느꼈어요“. 그 이후로 그 직원의 삶은 달라졌습니다. 한번는 새해가 되자 그가 ‘올해는 하나님을 위해 아름다운 일을 해봅시다!’ 라고 했고, 정말 주를 위해 많은 아름다운 일들을 했습니다.

  복음의 능력은 하나님의 말씀을 통해 역사하시는 성령님입니다 (23절). 오순절의 3000명, 그 이후로도 나와 여러분과 같은 셀 수 없는 많은 사람들이 있습니다. 우리가 가포에 오기도 전부터 예수를 믿었던 한 병원직원이 생각나네요. ”왜 선교사님이 그렇게 그리스도인에게 매일 성경을 읽는 것이 중요하다고 강조하시나 했는데, 이제는 알겠습니다. 말씀 없이는 할 수 없다는걸요“. 그는 이렇게 말하고, 그 배운 것을 다른 사람들에게 가르쳐주기위해 성서유니온의 간사가 되었습니다. 지금은 캐나다에 살고 있지요.

작고 보잘것없는 마을 가포는 한국교회를 넘어 동아시아에까지 큰영향을 미친 성서유니온의 발전의 못자리가 되었습니다.

  복음은 지금부터 영원까지 기쁜소식입니다(4절). 우리 환자중에 왕아줌마 라고 불리는 사람이 있었습니다. 30대 초반이였던 그녀는 결혼했었지만 척추에 결핵이 진행되자 친정으로 돌려보내졌습니다. 그녀는 마비가되어 걸을수도 없었고, 마비 이후에 걷기까지 회복이 안된 몇 안되는 환자중 한명이였습니다. 왕아줌마가 침대에 누워서 천국에 가면 금으로된 길을 걸을꺼라 노래하던게 생각납니다. 지금도 기쁜소식이요, 영원토록 기쁜소식입니다.

  본문으로 돌아와봅시다. 편지를 읽는사람들에게 베드로는 이렇게 인사합니다 ”은혜와 평강이 너희에게 더욱 많을지어다(MULTIPLIED – 곱해지다)“(2절). 베드로는 로마에서 30년 보다 더 오래전인 오순절과 놀라운 복음의 전파를 되돌아보며, 은혜와 평강이 더욱 많아지기를 바라고 있습니다. 가포가 성서유니온의 못자리가 되었다고 제가 말했는데, 가포는 또한 선교의 못자리가 됐습니다. 한 신학생 청년이 어린이 전도/선교를 하기위해 우리 병원에 왔었습니다. 이후에 그는 아내와 함께 선교훈련을 받으러 왔고 홍콩과 중국에 오랜기간 선교사로 섬겼습니다.

  가포교회에 성공적인 선교사역 프로그램이 있는게 저에게 기쁨이 됩니다. 우리는 전해야 할 기쁜소식이 있습니다. 우리 이 기쁜소식을 바쁘게 전합시다. 은혜와 평강이 여러분께 또 여러분을 통해 더욱 많아지기를 소망합니다. 아멘
